Jeremy Beckwith,

Jeremy joined Kleinwort Benson Private Bank in April 2003 as Chief Investment Officer from Merrill Lynch Investment Managers. He is responsible for the investment process and the performance of the discretionary portfolios. He has been responsible for the introduction of a multi-asset class approach to client investment at Kleinwort Benson.
At MLIM, his role was as Head of EAFE Equities (non-US equities for Americans), leading the team managing money for both mutual fund clients and large North American pension funds. Prior to moving to the EAFE team in 1998, he had been Managing Director of Merrill Lynch Global Asset Management responsible for the management of portfolios of high net worth private clients and small institutions from Europe and the Middle East, and also chaired the Global Investment Committee.
Previous jobs were as Head of Equities for Mitsubishi Finance International, and as an Equity Manager for Manufacturers Life Insurance Company.
He is married with two daughters and lives in Surrey. He has a life-long passion for cricket, and can be found on Saturday afternoons in the summer acting as a member of the Umpires’ Panel for the Surrey Championship League.
Jeremy holds an M.A. in Economics from St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge.


Arjan Berkelaar,

Arjan Berkelaar is a principal investment officer at the Quantitative Strategies, Risk & Analytics department of the World Bank. He joined the World Bank in July 2000. Before joining the World Bank, he worked at Ortec Consultants, a pension consultancy firm in the Netherlands. At the World Bank Arjan is mainly responsible for strategic asset allocation and asset liability management as well as risk budgeting for the Bank’s pension plan and the Bank’s post-retirement medical plan. In addition, he has worked on selecting external asset managers and risk management. Arjan has also advised Central Banks on reserves management issues and more recently advised governments in oil-rich developing countries on setting up funds for the future.

He wrote several articles published in journals such as The Review of Economics and Statistics, European Financial Management, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, and Operations Research and has spoken at numerous international and academic conferences. Arjan holds a PhD degree in Finance from the Erasmus University Rotterdam, an MSc degree in Mathematics (summa cum laude) from the Delft University of Technology and is a CFA charterholder.


Kevin J Carter,

Joined JPMorgan in November 2006 from Watson Wyatt Limited where he was a Senior Investment Consultant and Head of European Investment Practice. Prior to joining Watson Wyatt in 2002, Mr. Carter worked at Old Mutual plc for 16 years where he was chief executive officer for Old Mutual Asset Managers in the US and the UK. Mr Carter has also served as a director for the UK Society of Investment Professionals, as well as for several UK investment trusts and funds.
Mr. Carter holds a Ph.D in Finance from the University of Cape Town and is a graduate of the Witwatersrand Graduate Business School in South Africa.


Guy Coughlan,

Guy Coughlan, MD
Head of the Pension Asset Liability Management Advisory Group. Previously headed the Risk Management Products group, which was later spun off from JPMorgan as The RiskMetrics Group. In this role he was responsible for risk management products such as RiskMetrics, CreditMetrics, CALM and CASPAR. Joined JPMorgan in February 1994 and worked in the bank’s Fixed Income Research Group. Prior to joining JPMorgan his previous experience includes working for a major oil company.
Holds a B.Sc. (Honors) degree from the University of Western Australia and a D.Phil. (Ph.D.) in Physics from Oxford University in the UK.


John Dickson,

John Dickson is an owning Partner at Hymans Robertson LLP and Practice Manager of the Investment Consultant Practice. A qualified actuary, John joined Hymans Robertson in June 2003 from Abbey National where he was latterly head of their Stuctured Products team. Through this, John gained hands on experience of dealing in derivatives and is heavily involved in Hyman's research of investment bank products. John works with a range of larger clients in both the public and private sectors.

Andre du Plessis,

Andre du Plessis is head of Advanced Investment Solutions, a specialist advisory group based in London and responsible for advising pension funds and foundations on investment strategy and manager structures and selections. It also provides governance support designing and implementing more complex alternative investment strategies. Andre is also directly involved in the research and selection of hedge fund managers and allocations to different alternative strategies and managers.
Previously Andre was Chief Executive of Coronation Fund Managers, the institutional Funds of Hedge Funds business and a member of the IC selecting and managing hedge fund managers and strategy views. Prior to that he was head of the emerging markets at HSBC Investment Bank in London and had similar responsibilities at NatWest Markets. Andre has 25 years investment experience managing institutional funds and writing investment strategy research in various large and specialist institutions.

Roger Gray joined Hermes as Chief Investment Officer in September 2006, after four years as an independent institutional adviser to investment funds and asset management businesses. From 1997, he had been CEO/CIO of UBS Asset Management Switzerland and then Global Head of Asset Allocation/Currency for UBS Brinson. He started his career in asset management in 1983 with Rothschild Asset Management, where he was latterly the Chief Investment Officer and head of institutional business. He studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University and Economics as a post-graduate at Harvard University, where he was a teaching fellow in international finance and in commodity and securities markets

Pierre Guillemin,

Lars Jaeger,

Lars Jaeger holds a PhD degree in theoretical physics from the Max-Planck Institute for Physics of Complex Systems, Dresden. He studied physics and philosophy at the University of Bonn, Germany, and Ecole Polytechnique, Paris. After his post-doctorate studies in Dresden, Lars began his finance career as a quantitative researcher on econometric and mathematical modeling of financial markets at Olsen & Associates AG in Zurich. He subsequently joined the Hedge Fund group of Credit Suisse Asset management, where he was responsible for risk management and quantitative strategy analysis. Lars is a founding partner of saisGroup, an investment firm specializing on alternative investment strategies which merged with Partners Group, where he is now heading the group “Alternative Investment Research”. Lars holds the CFA charter and is a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM). He is the author of numerous research publications and the books “Risk Management of Alternative Investment Strategies”, published in 2002 with Financial Times Prentice Hall, “The New Generation of Risk Management for Hedge Funds and Private Equity“ (ed.) published by Euromoney in 2003, and “Through the Alpha Smokescreen: A guide to hedge fund return sources”, published by Institutional Investors (2005).




Niels Jensen,

Niels has more than 20 years of investment banking, private banking and asset management experience. He began his career at Andelsbanken in Copenhagen in 1984. Since 1986, he has been based in London, working for American investment banks Goldman Sachs, Oppenheimer and Lehman Brothers, where he was in charge of its European private wealth management business. It was also at Lehman Brothers that he developed the concept of investing that has now been put into effect at Absolute Return Partners. He is a graduate of University of Copenhagen with a Masters Degree in economics.



Fabrizio Ladi,

Fabrizio is a partner and member of the investment committee at Systematic Absolute Return AG (SAR). He is in charge of manager due diligence and is involved in manager sourcing. This includes conducting on-site manager visits, portfolio management, operational due diligence and risk control. SAR is a Zurich based asset management company that oversees several distinct niche alternative investments multi manager funds. SAR has several fund of funds in the area of asset finance and the market neutral space. Fabrizio has 11 years of entrepreneurial experience in the financial markets, covering both front end and executive positions. He is registered with the NASD currently holding a Series 7 & 55 license. He began managing investments in 1994. In 2001 he founded Renaissance Equity Partners LLP a Statistical Arbitrage hedge fund. The trading strategy was a derivation of his personal equities trading style. He designed developed and brought into production the proprietary order execution, risk management and redundancy platform. From 1997 till late 2003 he also acted as registered investment advisor in Italy and in the USA where he founded Piedmont investment advisors LLC. The company’s mission was the creation of investment portfolios using alternative investments, his holdings in the company where later sold to other Partners. Mr Ladi read Literature and Philosophy at University of Bologna and he graduated at the Edinburgh Academy in Scotland.

At SAR, Fabrizio is involved in analysing early stage and seasoned managers. Fabrizio constantly looks at the different qualitative risks that could affect the portfolio. The control of these often under estimated risks can lead to portfolio out performance and stability in the evolving hedge fund environment of today.

Philip Read is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, and a Fellow of the Pensions Management Institute. He is currently a member of Council, and a past Vice President, of the Pensions Management Institute.

Philip practiced as a Consulting Actuary in both South Africa and the UK, before joining GEC in 1993, where he became the Pensions Manager. In September 1999, Philip joined CarnaudMetalbox Group UK Limited, where he is the UK Pensions Manager. His responsibilities cover both Investment Strategy and the day-to-day administration of The Metal Box Pension Scheme, which currently has 24,000 Members and assets amounting to some £1.5 billion.

He is also non-executive Chairman of Coal Pension Trustees Services Limited, and will become the Chairman of the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme from 1 May 2007.

Roland Staub is the joint founder of the TS Group in Switzerland and is a Partner and Director of its two subsidiary companies: TS Trust GmbH, Switzerland and TS Trustee Suisse AG, Switzerland. He has been a Partner and Director of TS Trust GmbH since April 2004 and is responsible for handling group client relationships. He is also a Partner and Director of TS Trustee Suisse AG since its inception in November 2003, where Mr Staub is responsible for the development, structuring and selection of investments, including financial and tax driven products, to be offered to group clients. Mr Staub took a career break between October 2002 and November 2003 to pursue other interests and to establish the TS Group. Prior to this, Mr Staub worked at Schroder & Co Bank AG where he was a Director from April 2001 to October 2002. He was responsible for the development and creation of a family office division at the Bank, including the development and selection of financial products for group clients. Prior to this, from February 1998 to March 2001, Mr Staub worked at Citco (Suisse) S.A. as a Senior Officer and Member of Supervisory Board of Directors. Mr Staub is a Trust and Estate Practitioner, he also has a Law Degree from the University of Zurich and has been admitted as a lawyer to all courts of Switzerland.

Marcus Storr,
